Shavua Tov 10 Heshvan 5786

Shavua Tov

At the Tucson J, we believe that Judaism is not only a tradition to be preserved but a living source of joy, meaning, and belonging. Every day, through the programs and services we offer—from early childhood education to adult learning, from fitness to film, from arts and culture to holiday celebration—we strive to help people of all ages discover the beauty and relevance of Jewish life.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks taught that “Faith is not certainty; it is the courage to live with uncertainty and still find meaning.” In a world that often feels fragmented, our Jewish community remains steadfast in its purpose: to bring people together, to elevate the spirit, and to remind each of us that joy and learning are sacred acts.

When we celebrate Jewish joy, we affirm life itself—singing, dancing, and gathering in community. When we deepen Jewish literacy, we root ourselves in Torah, wisdom, and shared story. Together, these two forces joy and learning are what transform our J into something more than a building. They make it a Kehilah Kedoshah, a sacred community.

As we continue to grow, I invite you to join us for a moment of deep meaning and inspiration at the inaugural Z3 Conference tomorrow Sunday, November 2, right here at the Tucson J. This extraordinary gathering will bring together voices from across our community and around the world to explore what it means to build a shared Jewish future, one rooted in peoplehood, pluralism, and partnership.

The Psalmist reminds us, “Ivdu et Adonai b’simcha serve God with joy.” (Psalm 100:2). At the Tucson J, we live this verse every day, in laughter that fills our hallways, in the learning that deepens our understanding, and in the moments that remind us that Jewish life is not only ancient, but ever-renewing.

The beautiful words of Hinei Ma Tov resonate “How good and pleasant it is when we dwell together in unity.” These words of King David reflect the essence of Jewish joy. Belonging itself is holy, and that when we gather together in community, we become more than the sum of our parts.

In the song Seasons of Love from Rent it asks, “How do you measure a year in the life?” We measure ours in moments of community, learning, laughter, and connection, the very essence of belonging.

May this season be one of renewed purpose, profound learning, and overflowing joy. Together, we build a community where everyone belongs and some people join—because the door to Jewish life is always open.
