Shavua Tov 29 Adar 5785

Shavuah Tov

I have been thinking about the incredible importance of friendship and positive relationships as fundamental pillars of our shared Jewish values and traditions. It is in these connections that we find strength, resilience, and a deep commitment to our community—our Amiut Yehudit (Jewish Peoplehood).

Friendship is a sacred bond that transcends mere acquaintance; it is an embodiment of compassion, support, and mutual respect. In our tradition, we are taught that through acts of kindness and the love we share with one another, we not only enrich our own lives but also uplift those around us. The teachings of our ancestors remind us that “Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh”—all of Israel is responsible for one another. This powerful statement not only emphasizes our interconnectedness but also calls us to foster relationships that cultivate peace and harmony. Carole King wrote the beautiful words to You’ve Got a Friend, this version is sung by Carole and the incomparable James Taylor.

As we navigate the complexities of today’s world, let us carry forward the essence of these values. Our relationships with one another—be it with friends, family, or fellow community members—are vital to creating an inclusive and supportive environment. It is these relationships that draw us closer as a people, affirming our shared identity and commitment to the ideals that define us as a community of Jewish individuals.

Throughout our rich history, we have faced countless challenges, yet time and again, we have prevailed through the strength of our bonds. Every act of friendship, no matter how small, contributes to a broader tapestry of love and understanding that makes our community stronger. As we celebrate our traditions and heritage, let us recognize that nurturing these connections is an integral part of our journey as an Amiut Yehudit.

I am deeply grateful for each of you for embodying these values in your daily lives. Your dedication not only enriches our community but also sets an inspiring example for future generations. Together, let us continue to cultivate friendships and build positive relationships that reflect the essence of our Jewish identity.

Thank you for your support and commitment to our shared mission. It is fair to say, as Randy Newman wrote in Toy Story You’ve Got a Friend in Me. May we always cherish the bonds that unite us, and may our community continue to thrive through friendship and love.
