Shavua Tov 8 Av 5785

Shavua Tov

As this Shabbat comes to a close we enter a day of meaningful reflection on Tisha B’Av, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the powerful message of resilience and continuity that defines our Jewish people. Tisha B’Av reminds us of the challenges we have faced throughout history, yet also highlights our strength in overcoming adversity and remaining united as a community.

Last week, we witnessed this resilience firsthand during the 2025 JCC Maccabi Games and Access. Our teens and community members showed incredible spirit and determination, embodying the values that Tisha B’Av teaches us. Their participation in this prestigious event was not just about sports; it was a celebration of our culture, our heritage, and our unwavering commitment to each other.

The experiences we shared hosting the 2025 JCC Maccabi Games and Access reinforced our sense of belonging, connection, and pride in our Jewish identity. From the friendships forged to the challenges overcome, each moment served as a reminder that even in difficult times, our community thrives through support and collaboration. Take a moment to enjoy some Highlights  of the week.

To express the duality of joy and sadness that resonates deeply within our tradition, I encourage you to reflect on the song Hinei Ma Tov, this version by Rick Recht  This beautiful melody celebrates unity and togetherness, reminding us that even in our sorrow, we can find moments of joy when we come together as a community.

In the spirit of our tradition, let me share this enlightening quote from the Talmud:

“Whoever saves a single life is as if they had saved an entire world.”

(Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 37a)

This powerful teaching reminds us of the impact we can have on each other’s lives. When we support our community and one another, we are not only preserving our collective spirit but also nurturing the future of our Jewish heritage.

As a community and a people we often hold sorrow and joy, this emotion is beautifully captured in the words of Naomi Shemer in Al Kol Elie, this one sung by Cantor Azi Schwartz and Rabbi Angela Buchdahl.

Access to these remarkable experiences is vital for our youth and community. We are committed to ensuring that every participant can take part, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our community truly stepped up to help make this vision a reality, enabling us to strengthen our community and build the leaders of tomorrow.

On this Tisha B’Av, let us reflect on our past while looking forward with hope and determination for the future. Together, we can continue to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and resilient Jewish community in Tucson.
