Shavua Tov
I hope this message finds you well. As we continue to nurture our vibrant community at the Tucson J, I am reminded of the Beach Boys’ song written by the late Brian Wilson In my room Its themes of introspection, solace, and connection resonate deeply with our mission and values.
“In My Room” conveys the importance of having a safe space for reflection, where we can retreat to gather our thoughts and find peace. In Judaism, we emphasize the value of “Heshbon HaNefesh,” or taking account of one’s soul, which encourages us to engage in self-reflection and personal growth. As we support one another in this journey, we create an environment that fosters understanding and compassion.
At the Tucson J, we strive to be that sanctuary for our community—a welcoming space where individuals can come together, share their experiences, and find comfort. Your dedication and generosity play a crucial role in cultivating this atmosphere, allowing us to offer programs and resources that uplift and enrich the lives of all who walk through our doors.
As we cultivate this sense of sanctuary together, let us remember the power of connection and the vital role each of us plays in creating a supportive and nurturing community. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our shared vision. I look forward to collaborating with you to enhance the lives of our community.
As we move deeper into this vibrant summer season, I want to take a moment to reaffirm the heart and purpose of our work at the J.
Each day, we are guided by our service pledge:
We create community based on Jewish values by providing the highest quality programs and services in a safe and secure environment for all people of all ages.
We seek to create a warm and welcoming environment where everyone belongs and some people join. We are building a Kehillah Kedoshah—a sacred community—through authentic and meaningful partnerships.
This is not just a statement. It is the foundation of everything we do—from the classes we offer, to the friendships we nurture, to the inclusive spaces we create for individuals and families of every background and stage of life. It is a vision of belonging, built on Jewish values and open to all.
And now, in just 34 short days, that vision will come to life in a remarkable way as we welcome the world to Tucson for the 2025 JCC Maccabi Games + Access. Over a thousand Jewish teens, their coaches, families, and supporters from across the globe will gather here—not only to compete, but to forge friendships, strengthen Jewish identity, and experience the joy of peoplehood.
The Games reflect the very best of who we are: excellence, community, inclusion, and partnership. They are a living example of our sacred work—building a Kehillah Kedoshah that celebrates diversity, fosters unity, and inspires all who take part.
Even as we prepare to welcome this global gathering, we are mindful that our community—and indeed the Jewish world—is not whole. Our hearts remain with the families of the hostages still being held in Gaza. We pray for their safe and swift return, and we will not cease to advocate and hope until all are home. Please listen to this beautiful version of Vehi Sheamda a prayer that speaks to the resilience and enduring nature of the Jewish people.
As we move forward, let’s continue to embrace the journey together, knowing that every step we take has the potential to create positive change. Thank you for being an essential part of this beautiful community. I look forward to our continued collaboration as we strive to impact the lives of those around us.
