Shavua Tov
As we enter the festival of Sukkot on Monday night, we are reminded of the tradition of ushpizin, welcoming honored guests into our sukkah. This mitzvah is not only about opening a temporary dwelling; it is about opening our hearts and homes, creating space for community, and recognizing that true joy comes when shared together.
At the Tucson J, this tradition is reflected in our service pledge: we create community based on Jewish values by providing the highest quality programs and services in a safe and secure environment for all people of all ages. We strive to be a modern sukkah, a place of belonging, learning, wellness, and connection for everyone.
The words of the evening prayer Hashkeiveinu ask G-d to “spread over us a sukkat shalom, a shelter of peace.” That is our vision for the J: to be a house of peace, where all who walk through our doors feel embraced, uplifted, and safe.
The Talmud (Sukkah 27b) teaches that “all of Israel is fit to dwell together in one sukkah.” What a powerful reminder that our strength comes not from walls or boundaries but from our willingness to come together, side by side, under one roof.
I am reminded of House at Pooh Corner, by Loggins and Messina, a song of comfort and enduring friendship. Just as that song evokes a safe place we can always return to, the J seeks to be a home where community and connection are always waiting for you.
As we gather beneath the open roof of the sukkah, we also open our hearts in prayer Acheinu Kol Beit Yisrael, for our brothers and sisters who remain in distress and captivity. We pray that the hostages who are alive will soon come home to begin their healing, and that those who are no longer with us may be brought to proper burial.
May this Sukkot bring blessings of shelter, joy, and peace for all. A true sukkat shalom over our people, our community, and our world.
