Monthly Mitzvah – May: Collection Drive for VA Southern AZ Healthcare System, May 1-31
The Why: On Memorial Day (May 29), we honor (kavod) and remember (yizkor) the people who lost their lives in service to our country, whether the violence that claimed their lives happened in a forward operating base overseas, or their battles continued once they returned home. Judaism has a rich tradition of memorializing loved ones and creating times throughout the year to remember those who have died. While Memorial Day and Veterans Day are two separate days of acknowledgement, for our May Mitzvah, we are choosing to practice the values of kavod and yizkor by providing needed resources to support the well-being of veterans.
The Cause: The VA Southern Arizona Healthcare System provides all Veterans with outstanding health care, trains America’s future health care providers, and conducts important medical research. They provide services at 10 locations; 7 community-based outpatient clinics and 3 Rural Health Coordination Centers in Casa Grande, Green Valley, Safford, Sierra Vista, Tucson, and Yuma, including our Tucson VA Medical Center. For the month of May, the community is collecting the following items to support local veterans through the clinics and for those who have recently received housing
