Our Shay-Shay Garden is a community-centered place to grow fresh, healthy food and a commemorative space to honor community members who have passed away. A memorial gate displays names and dates on decorative steel leaves. Gardeners from our ECE and J Care programs enjoy caring for the Shay-Shay garden as well!
This is a Community Gardens of Tucson (CGT) and Tucson J collaboration.
What is a Community Garden?
A community garden consists of separate garden plots that are rented to individuals or families to grow food, flowers or ornamental plants. Gardeners may work together to organize gatherings or community work days but the produce they grow in their individual plots belongs to them. In addition to providing members with healthy food, community gardens have been shown to have physical, emotional and spiritual benefits. CGT manages 25 gardens throughout the City of Tucson and promotes community connections through gardening.
With their CGT membership gardeners receive:
- a 60 sq ft plot
- drip irrigation on a timer
- access to shared garden tools
- a quarterly newsletter
- monthly education meetings
- a site coordinator
- a community of gardeners
