Q+A: Sara Hoag on 35 Years at the J!

Say hello to Sara Hoag, our wonderful Payroll + Benefits Specialist.

This year marks 35 years of Sara’s dedication to the Tucson J. Read along to learn more about Sara and her career reflections.

Sara Hoag
Tell us about your role at the Tucson J!

My role at the J is Payroll and Benefits Specialist. I enjoy what I do and take it very seriously, as it directly impacts all the wonderful employees here at the J.

How has your work and role evolved since you first started at the J?

When I first started 35 years ago, it was just me and the CFO in the Accounting office. Now there are 5 of us. I have processed almost 8,000 new employees over the years.

Over the years, you’ve worked alongside many different people. What have those experiences taught you about collaboration, connection, or community? There have been a lot of people come through these doors, each with their own unique personality.  That’s what makes the J such a fun place to work.

How has the J grown or evolved over the years?
The J has grown tremendously over the years. Empty spaces have been developed for new and exciting programs, as well as the addition of the Sculpture Garden and the Tennis Center.

What has been your favorite Jewish holiday to celebrate at the J?
My favorite holiday at the J is Purim. I love to watch all the little ones parade around the J in their adorable costumes.

Can you share a favorite or special memory from over the years?
I have a lot of special memories but one of my favorites is my trip to Israel. It was so much more than I was expecting. It was a real honor to be asked by the CFO to participate in the staff trip.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their career at the J?
My advice would be to enjoy the environment and have fun in your job.

Mike Gadarian, Tucson J Chief Financial Officer

“Sara has always kept the J’s best interests at heart. Her dedication shows in the way she consistently works hard and goes the extra mile to make sure things get done—and done well. That level of commitment has been a driving force behind so many successes here. It’s clear that her efforts aren’t just about completing tasks; they’re about strengthening the J and the community we serve.”

Fran Katz, Tucson J Chief Development Officer

“I’ve had the privilege of working with Sara for the past 35 years—first as a volunteer and now as a colleague. Throughout this time, Sara has consistently demonstrated her dedication to the J and her willingness to help in any way possible. Her commitment and generosity have made a lasting impact, and it’s truly been a pleasure to work alongside her.”

Thank you, Sara, for 35 years of supporting the J and its employees, and always being a friendly face we can count on.
