Team Spotlight: Veronika Zinsmaier

Learn more about Veronika Zinsmaier, a Tucson J personal trainer and Parkinson's Exercise Wellness Program Instructor!

Over the last 20 years, Veronika Zinsmaier has dedicated countless hours working with clients, both young and old, as a personal trainer at the Tucson J. Her journey at the J began primarily because it was close to home, and also because the flexible schedule allowed her to balance work with being a mom. “I could do four hours a day and then still be home with the kids,” she said.

On teaching Parkinson’s Exercise Wellness Program classes

Having always worked with clients with Parkinson’s disease, Veronika was eventually asked to teach as part of the small group Parkinson’s Exercise Wellness Program. “I thought, I have so many clients here, but it’s like, ‘that will be a challenge.’ I’ve always been interested in finding out new things. I knew about Parkinson’s, but a fitness class in a group setting is different work,” said Veronika.

Veronika has been teaching the Parkinson’s Exercise Wellness Program classes at the J since 2022, along with working with her many personal training clients. She has watched her clients make tremendous progress, such as a Parkinson’s participant who has gained the confidence and ability to walk without her canes.

“I always try to have fun in class, and I always feel like if participants can forget for one hour that they have the disease, that is my goal and that usually works,” said Veronika.

Especially in the Parkinson’s class, there is an emphasis on socialization and connection. “I think a group setting works for their particular condition because they really see that they’re improving and that they have a group of people that are in the same situation. That social part is important,” said Veronika.

It is important for those with the disease to interact with others going through the same thing – they can connect about emotional or personal matters or discuss treatment and doctors.

On Exercise and Aging

It is no secret that exercise and movement is important for people of all ages and abilities. The Tucson J Fitness and Wellness Center serves people of all ages weekly, including some who are 100 or older, proving that age is just a number.

Veronika said that exercise is especially important for older adults because it allows them to maintain independence and, truly, the ability to complete everyday tasks, like caring for pets or grandchildren, getting into the car, and cooking.

“Your life or everyday life will be easier if you have more strength,” said Veronika.

Something important for us all to remember – it is never too late to begin your fitness journey. “I had a client who started when she was 79 years old. She had never exercised before, and I trained her for at least 15 years. Today, she is still good and very mobile. She has a lot of steps in her house, which helps her stay active,” said Veronika.

Thank you, Veronika, for your dedication to the Tucson J and the health of our community!
