Shavua Tov 21 Tevet 5786

Shavua Tov

Shavua Tov,

The other evening, I read a beautiful piece by Mijal Bitton that introduced me to a profound teaching of Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik on the concept of shlichut mission.

In contemporary Jewish life, we often encounter shlichut through the work of our community shlichim at the Weintraub Israel Center. Rabbi Soloveitchik, however, offered a far more expansive understanding. He taught that to be human is to be “sent.” Every individual life carries a distinct shlichut a unique task or purpose. The particular circumstances of a person’s life their time and place, family and community, strengths and struggles shape the contours of that mission.

When we understand ourselves as emissaries (shlichim), we are not acting alone. Rabbi Soloveitchik spoke of the promise of shlichut as one of “cosmic companionship”: the belief that God accompanies us, acts through us, and supports us as we pursue our purpose.

In the song One Step Closer by Julie Benko, we are encouraged to show the courage to step into the unknown, like Nachshon. Follow you personal journey filled with cosmic companionship.

This teaching has stayed with me, and it has led me to reflect deeply on the work of the J and on our shared journey of building and strengthening community. I want to speak from the heart about who we are, what we stand for, and the vision that continues to guide us at the Tucson J.

At the Tucson J, we hold a core belief that shapes every interaction and every decision:

Everyone belongs, and some people join.

This is not a slogan. It is a promise.

It is our commitment to cultivating a culture where every person regardless of background, identity, pathway, or level of affiliation feels welcomed, valued, and embraced as part of our community.

Through intentional and thoughtful programming, we have the privilege and responsibility to enhance Jewish joy: to bring to life the beauty, meaning, and celebration inherent in Jewish tradition. At the same time, we strive to deepen Jewish literacy, ensuring that people of all ages have opportunities to learn, to grow, and to feel connected to the enduring story and values of our people.

Our work is about strengthening Jewish life not only for those who walk through our doors already feeling connected, but also for those who are searching for belonging, for inspiration, for curiosity, or simply for a place where they can be fully themselves. We create spaces of meaning. We educate and inspire the next generation. We nurture identity, foster relationships, and help people experience Judaism as something lived joyfully and communally.

The vision before us is both aspirational and attainable:

The Tucson J must continue to rise into its highest potential as a beating heart of Jewish communal life a place where every person finds belonging, purpose, and a meaningful connection to Jewish peoplehood.

We pursue this vision while also welcoming the broader Tucson community individuals and families who choose the J for wellness, culture, learning, recreation, or simply for the experience of being part of something larger. Their presence enriches us. It widens our circles and reflects our values in action.

My gratitude for this community is profound, and my belief in what we can accomplish together is unwavering.

Rabbi Soloveitchik taught that shlichut is not a one-time assignment, but a lifelong journey. It demands ongoing reflection and recommitment. He emphasized that we are judged not solely by outcomes, but by the sincerity and perseverance with which we pursue our mission because the task itself is often unending.

I look forward with great excitement to continuing this sacred work together, as we truly live into our belief that everyone belongs, and some people join.

May each of us embrace our personal role as Shaliach and join together in community as we gain strength in working together.
