December Staff Spotlight Round-Up

Whether through a swimming lesson, an art class, or simply a smile, each day the Tucson J staff brightens the lives of our members and guests. We are proud of the variety of skills and stories that our staff bring to their work, and celebrate this each week through our Facebook and Instagram “Staff Spotlight” series.

Demaris Weitzel | ECE Teacher

This year, Demaris is celebrating 30 years at the Tucson J! As part of the celebration, Demaris answered a series of questions about her career, teaching philosophy, and memories.

Cass Johnson | Director of Camp + Youth

Q: Can you share a little about yourself and your background?

A: I grew up going to an overnight camp, the Triangle Y Ranch Camp in Oracle, eventually becoming the camp director! I have spent the last 3 years as Day Camp Director for the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona. I’m born and raised in Tucson and love that it is truly the world’s largest small town! My biggest priority and life mission is to build community and have fun everywhere I go.

Q: What’s your philosophy when it comes to leading the camp experience and setting the tone each day?

A: Every day at camp is a fresh opportunity to spark curiosity, build connection, and create unforgettable memories. I believe in setting the tone with positivity, presence, and purpose! My philosophy centers on creating an environment where everyone feels safe, seen, and inspired to try new things. My goal is to infuse an openness to the spontaneous magic that only happens in a camp setting. I hope the kids leave feeling a little braver, kinder, and a lot more connected. That’s the power of camp and why I show up every day with heart and intention.
