Shavua Tov

Shavua Tov

As we stand at the threshold of Rosh Hashanah, the season of new beginnings, we are invited into a sacred practice: to dream, to set intentions, and to imagine what might be possible for ourselves, our families, and our community. The final days of Elul remind us that reflection must be partnered with resolve—that our hopes gain strength when transformed into commitments.

At the Tucson J, we see daily the power of family and community. Together, we create a “town square”—a sacred gathering place where everyone belongs, and some people join. Here, children discover their passions, families strengthen their bonds, older adults find belonging, and all of us are enriched by Jewish values and by one another’s presence.

The wisdom of our tradition reminds us: “Do not separate yourself from the community” (Pirkei Avot 2:4). Strength lies not in isolation but in the weaving together of our lives. Alone, our dreams may be fragile; together, they take root, gaining resilience and hope.

As we prepare to hear the shofar’s call, may we be stirred not only to personal reflection but also to collective renewal. May this be a year where our shared aspirations become reality—where our J continues to be the beating heart of a vibrant and compassionate Jewish community.

I am reminded of the Hebrew song Hinei Mah Tov, Hinei mah tov umah na’im, shevet achim gam yachad—“How good and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters dwell together.” This is not just a lyric; it is our calling.

And as Joni Mitchell reminds us in Circle Game, the seasons turn and we are carried along with them, forever renewed by the cycles of time. Rosh Hashanah invites us to step into this circle with intention—aware of the past, hopeful for the future, and strengthened by the community around us.

With gratitude for your leadership, your generosity, and your dreams, I wish you and your loved ones Shanah Tovah U’Metukah, a good and sweet new year. May it be filled with health, peace, and shared purpose.
