Shavua Tov
As the sun sets and we prepare to mark the close of Shabbat with the beautiful ritual of Havdallah, we are reminded of the sacred transition from the holiness of Shabbat to the rhythm and potential of the new week. Havdallah—which means “separation”—is not an end, but a bridge. It marks the passage from rest to action, from spiritual reflection to renewed purpose. I invite you to enjoy this Havdallah Service from BBYO.
And what a week lies ahead.
In just hours, the 2025 JCC Maccabi Games will begin, transforming this moment of separation into a profound moment of connection. Over a thousand Jewish teens, along with coaches, delegation heads, host families, volunteers, and community members from across the globe, will come together right here in Tucson. For one unforgettable week, our J and our entire community will become a living testament to Jewish peoplehood, shared values, and collective spirit.
As we extinguish the Havdallah candle—its braided wick symbolizing the intertwining of different strands into one unified flame—we reflect on the same essence that will define this week: cohesion, connection, and community. Each athlete, volunteer, and supporter brings their own story, but together, we will create something greater than the sum of its parts.
In the words of the Talmud (Shevuot 39a):
“Kol Yisrael arevim zeh bazeh” — All of Israel is responsible for one another.
This ancient teaching reminds us that our strength lies in our unity—each of us holding one another in care, in pride, and in shared purpose.
There are two additional songs that continue to play in my head as I get ready to shut down before the big day, the first is Give it all you got the theme song for the 1980 Olympics written and performed by Chuck Mangione, who passed away earlier this week and the second is the theme song from the old bugs bunny cartoon”
“Overture, curtains, lights
This is it, you’ll hit the heights
And oh what heights we’ll hit
On with the show this is it”
May this week be one of joy, meaningful encounters, spirited competition, and deepening Jewish identity.
May we all feel surrounded by strength, purpose, and light.
Cochenu b’Achduteynu | כחינו באחדותינו | Our strength is in our unity.
Am Yisrael Chai | עם ישראל חי
Bring them Home Now I מחזירים אותם הביתה עכשיו
